ADA Compliance and Detectable Warning Surfaces

ADA Compliance and Detectable Warning Surfaces

In 1990, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) (42 U.S.C. 12101 et seq.) became a civil rights law prohibiting the discrimination of individuals with disabilities in all areas open to the general public. Guaranteeing equal opportunities to individuals with disabilities, it also ensures the same civil rights protections afforded to all individuals on the basis of race, color, sex, national origin, age, and religion. These rights apply to areas of public accommodations, employment, transportation, state and local government services and telecommunications.

Additional ADA amendments defined standards for detectable warning surfaces (also known as tactile warning surfaces) in order to ensure the safety of persons with low or no vision while walking in public areas. These tiles are typically installed on sidewalks, pedestrian crossings, transit platforms, escalators and stairs, wheelchair ramps, where the surface elevation changes, and more. Detectable warning surface tiles may be installed on top of the walking surface (surface-applied) or built directly into it (wet-set or cast in place).

With detectable warning tiles, truncated domes provide the safest path by indicating directional and other changes to the surface being traveled. The ADA has published guidelines regarding where tactile warning surfaces are to be installed as well as the size, shape, and dimensions of the tile and the domes on it.

TufTile products are fully compliant with all ADAAG, PROWAG, and CA Title 24 requirement. Our products are indicated for all public areas requiring a detectable warning surface, such as:

  • Curb ramps
  • Handicap ramps
  • Transit platforms (rail and bus)
  • Public paths of travel with elevation changes
  • Exterior paths of travel
  • Vehicular ways or parking area that meet retail entry or exit points
  • Landings and blended transitions
  • Refuge islands greater than 6 feet in length

TufTile detectable warning products meet or exceed ASTM standards for weather resistance, slip resistance, durability, and detectability, as well as our internal quality control standards. We offer warning tiles in three materials:
